Needs Assessment Summary
Each building completed a needs assessment in the spring to prepare for the upcoming school year. This year they added an additional layer shared by KSDE in response to HB 2567. In the Needs Assessment administrators responded to recommended questions/statements.
Schools centered their responses on three main components; Barriers, Budget, and Timeframe for success. Buildings at all levels were consistent with identified barriers and budget needs. A summary of the responses are below.
Barriers:
- Balancing trauma, SEL needs, language and other socioeconomic factors (Poverty) with grade-level expectations.
- The time needed for Language development. (Trilingual and bilingual)
- High need for SEL/Behavior support for students and teachers.
- Hiring and Retaining highly qualified instructional staff members.
- Limited amount of instructional time (school days or time in the day)
Budget:
- Professional Development
- Collaboration time
- Universal Pre K
- SEL Curriculum
- Connections with staff/students/families/community
- Extended learning/instructional time
Timeframe for Success:
- This varies - schools are optimistic with the progress being made, but understand that many of our students will need additional time and support to reach the State’s success measure. Overall buildings feel it will take 5+ years to students to reach the level 3 on the KAP. The buildings know that with new students coming into the district the 5+ year is a goal to strive for, but understand that adjustments will be necessary.
